After receiving feedback i decided to make some of my photos look more professional by editing out some of the background.
For example, here is one of my images that i used on my front page and contents page (bottom)
I then used Gimp to select, sample colour, paint over the marks, and smudge in the edges to make it look natural. (Top) i think the overall effect looks much more professional and more effective.
