Evaluation Questions

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Before beginning the design for my magazine, i analysed a number of different current student magazines. For instance, i analysed the front cover of Ludlow College's "Student ID" magazine and also "First Car". From these i picked up on the use of vibrant colours and lots of interesting imags that i have also used on my magazine. Like the Student ID mag, i have tilted my photos to make them appear more fun and interesting. Also, like the First Car mag, i have used one main image as the background of my front cover, leaving room for the coverlines around it. I also included a strapline, with exclusive gossip, similar to both of these magazines.
For my contents page i analysed another magazine and used the same kind of layout for my own contents page - columns. I also copied a miniature copy of my front cover to my contents page as this is what the professional magazine had done. As well as this i included a little "happy reading" note from the author of the magazine, making my contents page seem more friendly.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?
I firstly decided on my target audience - 16 - 18 year olds. This meant that i had to link this target audience with appropriate topics, photos and text. For instance, i used many photos of people of that age. I also used relevant headlines such as, "The hottest gossip from the first bash of the year" that would appeal mainly to this audience. The colour scheme was also significant - it used both manly and feminie colours (pink and blue) so it had the ability to appeal to both sexes (although it did focus more towards females).

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
A company may wish to distribute my magazine because it appeals to a wide yet precise audience - 16-18 year olds in college who enjoy college events, music, fashion and relationships. The appearance of my front cover is very eye-catching and would stand out on a magazine rack. It is also a relatively cheap magazine, so it would be perfect for students who have a low income.

Who would be the audience for your media product?
The audience for my student magazine will be college students, age 16-18, and it will be a uni-sex magazine so it will be for both male and female readers (but some aspects will appeal more to females than males, i.e. relationship advice).

How did you attract/address your audience?
I have used lots and lots of relevant and interesting photos on my front cover and contents page - i have included lots of teenagers doing what they do best - listening to music, having relationship issues at a party, etc, and this will attract that specific type of person. Also i have used very relevant cover lines such as "The hottest gossip from the first bash of the year" and "Relaionship issues?" which will draw the readers in and make them want to continue reading and buying this magazine. As well as this, i directly addressed the audience on the contents page of my magazine by writing a little note from the author, just basically saying "enjoy reading" which makes th magazine seem friendlier and more personal.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
I have learnt to use microsoft publisher to a higher level to create a professional-looking and high quality front cover and contents page. Also i used Adobe Photoshop Elements to edit my photos and make them more eye-catching - for instance i hightened the brightness and contrast levels to make them more defined and sharper. Also i used the magic wand tool to edit out any blemishes on the skin of the people in the photo, this made them look more professional (like models). On top of this, i fo7und out that you can download fonts form off the internet and install them on the Font file on your desktop, so you can use completely new and original fonts to make the magazine more unique.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
I have learnt that research is a very important factor in being able to design and create a magazine thast is both professional and of a very high quality but also effective and able to be sold in a shop for a specific target audience.
